Resources: Keywords
Before even considering optimizing your website for search engines, do a sesearch on keywords. Good keywords are defined as the words or phrases that are relevant to the theme and content of your site and also have good chances to produce results, i.e. traffic to your website. In other words, the keywords you chose have to be not only relevant, but also effective. For example, if you decide to optimize your webpage for a keyword “free games”, good chances are you will face several million competing web pages, and you will be lost in the middle of the search results. On the other hand, if you do your homework and spend some time researching the right keywords, you might come up with the keywords and keyphrases that are not only relevant, but also can produce visible results.
Keyword relevancy - The most important feature of your keywords is relevancy. In other words, relevancy means that the keywords you are optimizing your web page for have to be consistent with its theme and contents. Search engines are known to penalize or even not index at all pages that are using irrelevant keywords. It may take 60-90 days (more in some cases) for a search engine crawler to come back to your site. It’a a price that shouldn’t be paid for something as simple as keyword relevancy. Also, keywords have to be similar to the words used in the Title Tage, as well as the ones that are in Description Tag.
Keyword Density - This is another important term talking about keywords. It can be defined as the number of times a certain word appears on your web page in relation to the total number of words. Search engines ignore some common words, such as in, at, on, the, a and a lot of others, so they are not playing any role in determining the keyword density. Try to avoid them. Technically, the sentence “I like playing tennis” has a lower keyword density for a word “tennis” than a sentence “I like tennis”. The keyword density in the first sentence would be 20%, while in the second one – 33%, if we consider the word “I” to be counted towars the total number of words. Keyword Density can play a major role in determining the ranking position of your web page. In fact, not only it can, but it does, that’s why it is extremely important not only to chose relevant and effective keywords, but also keep their density in the range which is well tolerated by search engines.
